Painted Turtle Care Guide
Chrysemys picta · Freshwater Reptile/Amphibian

What Painted Turtle look like
Chrysemys picta is a streamlined aquatic turtle with a smooth dark carapace and vivid red, orange, and yellow markings along the shell margins, head, neck, and limbs. Regional forms vary in pattern, but the painted look and low oval shell are consistent field marks. Males are usually smaller and may develop longer front claws and tails than females.
Behavior & temperament
Painted Turtles are diurnal baskers that use logs, rocks, and banks to warm and dry their shells. In captivity they swim actively, forage along the bottom, and investigate food with enthusiasm. They are less massive than large sliders but still messy, predatory toward small tank mates, and dependent on UVB and basking heat.
Diet & feeding
Painted Turtles are omnivores that eat aquatic insects, worms, crustaceans, carrion, plants, and algae. In captivity, feed quality turtle pellets, leafy greens, aquatic plants, earthworms, insects, and occasional protein treats.
Behind the name
Chrysemys means golden turtle, and picta means painted, referring to the colorful markings.
