Rosy Red Minnow Care Guide
Pimephales promelas · Freshwater Fish

What Rosy Red Minnow look like
The Rosy Red Minnow is the domestic pale orange-pink morph of the Fathead Minnow. It has a small, sturdy minnow body, rounded head, short fins, and plain coloration without the ornate tail or metallic scales of goldfish. Adults usually stay around 2 to 3 inches.
Behavior & temperament
Rosy Red Minnows are peaceful, hardy, social coolwater fish that do best in groups. They are active midwater and lower-water foragers and tolerate a wide range of conditions when water is clean and well oxygenated. Males guard nesting sites under hard surfaces during breeding. They are common as feeder fish, but aquarium stock should be quarantined and treated as pets rather than disposable food.
Diet & feeding
Fathead Minnows are omnivores that eat algae, detritus, small invertebrates, insect larvae, and plankton. In aquariums they accept flakes, small pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable-based foods. Quarantine feeder-source fish carefully because they are often sold in poor condition.
Behind the name
Pimephales means fat head; promelas means before-black or dusky-fronted, referring to wild breeding coloration.
