What Splendid Killifish look like
The Splendid Killifish, Aphyosemion splendopleure, exhibits a fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 2.5 inches (6.35 cm). Males are characterized by their strikingly vivid coloration, displaying a kaleidoscope of iridescent hues including red, blue, green, and yellow, particularly pronounced on their elongated dorsal and anal fins. In contrast, females are more subdued, presenting a plain brown coloration that aids in camouflage. This sexual dimorphism is pronounced, with males showcasing larger, more ornate fins and a more slender body compared to the more robust females. Notably, the species possesses a well-defined lateral line system, which aids in detecting vibrations in the water, and their dentition is adapted for a carnivorous diet, featuring small, sharp teeth suitable for capturing small invertebrates. Defensive adaptations include their ability to quickly dart into dense vegetation, where their coloration provides effective concealment from predators.
Behavior & temperament
Aphyosemion splendopleure is primarily a solitary species, although males may engage in displays of territoriality, particularly during breeding seasons. They inhabit the upper to mid-water column, often found among floating vegetation in shallow, slow-moving waters. Breeding behavior is characterized by the practice of egg scattering, where females deposit eggs among the substrate or vegetation, which are then fertilized by males. The species is generally peaceful but can exhibit aggression during mating rituals or when males establish dominance over territory. Their temperament is typically shy, preferring to remain hidden among plants, making them less suitable for community tanks with more boisterous species.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Splendid Killifish primarily feeds on small invertebrates, including insect larvae and zooplankton. In captivity, they require a diet rich in protein, ideally consisting of high-quality flake foods, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to meet their carnivorous needs.
