What Spotted Skiffia Multipunctata look like
The Spotted Skiffia (Skiffia multipunctata) is a small, laterally compressed livebearer that typically reaches a maximum adult size of approximately 2.5 inches (6.4 cm). This species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males displaying more vibrant coloration and a more pronounced pattern of dark spots against an olive background, while females tend to be larger and more subdued in color. Unique morphological features include a well-developed dorsal fin that extends along the back, an adipose fin situated posterior to the dorsal fin, and a distinctive split in the caudal fin, characteristic of the Goodeidae family. The lateral line is present and functional, aiding in the detection of movement in the water column. Defensive adaptations include rapid swimming capabilities and a tendency to utilize dense aquatic vegetation for cover.
Behavior & temperament
The Spotted Skiffia is primarily a social species that exhibits a tendency to form loose aggregations, although it is not an obligate schooler. It typically inhabits the mid to upper levels of the water column in its natural habitat, which consists of shallow freshwater environments in Mexico. Breeding behavior is characterized by viviparity, with females giving birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The species displays a generally peaceful temperament, although males can exhibit territorial behavior during breeding seasons, particularly when competing for mates.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Spotted Skiffia is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, detritus, and plant matter. In captivity, it thrives on a balanced diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as blanched vegetables.
