What Turkana Jewel Cichlid look like
The Turkana Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis exsul) exhibits a medium-sized, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of 4-5 inches, although some specimens may attain up to 10 inches in length. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, with males displaying a vibrant red body adorned with striking blue-green iridescent spots, while females are generally more subdued in coloration, often exhibiting a duller hue. This species possesses a robust, elongated head with a terminal mouth featuring sharp, conical teeth adapted for omnivorous feeding. The dorsal fin is elongated and continuous, extending from the nape to the caudal peduncle, while the anal fin is similarly elongated, contributing to the fish's streamlined appearance. Notably, the Turkana Jewel Cichlid has a well-defined lateral line that aids in detecting vibrations in the water, enhancing its predatory capabilities. Defensive adaptations include rapid color changes and the ability to retreat into crevices among rocky substrates.
Behavior & temperament
The Turkana Jewel Cichlid is primarily a territorial and aggressive species, often exhibiting solitary behavior or forming small, loose groups during breeding seasons. It typically occupies the mid to lower water column, preferring rocky habitats where it can establish territories. Breeding behavior is characterized by the formation of monogamous pairs, with females laying eggs on flat surfaces, which are then guarded by both parents. The species is known for its vibrant displays during courtship, where males exhibit their colorful patterns to attract females. Aggression levels can be high, particularly during breeding, and they may exhibit territorial behavior towards other fish, especially in confined spaces.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Turkana Jewel Cichlid is an omnivore, feeding on a varied diet that includes small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus. In captivity, it requires a balanced diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, as well as vegetable matter to ensure optimal health.
