What Whitespot Eartheater look like
Satanoperca leucosticta, commonly known as the Whitespot Eartheater, exhibits a medium-sized, laterally compressed body that typically reaches a maximum adult size of 6-8 inches (15-20 cm). The body coloration is predominantly olive-green, adorned with striking bright white spots, which serve as a diagnostic feature of the species. Iridescent blue markings can also be observed, adding to its visual appeal. This species displays minimal sexual dimorphism, with males generally being slightly larger and exhibiting more pronounced coloration during breeding. A notable morphological adaptation is its specialized dentition, which is designed for sifting through substrate to extract food, complemented by a well-developed lateral line system that aids in detecting vibrations in the water. The presence of an adipose fin further distinguishes this cichlid from other genera within the family Cichlidae, enhancing its streamlined profile for efficient movement in its benthic habitat.
Behavior & temperament
The Whitespot Eartheater is primarily a benthic dweller, exhibiting a behavior characterized by continuous sifting of sand substrates in search of food. This species is generally social, often found in small groups, but can exhibit territorial behavior, particularly during breeding periods. They are not obligate schoolers but do benefit from the presence of conspecifics, which can reduce stress levels. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females lay eggs on flat surfaces, and males display courtship behaviors to attract females. The temperament of the Whitespot Eartheater can range from moderately peaceful to mildly aggressive, especially when establishing territory or during spawning events.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Whitespot Eartheater primarily feeds on small invertebrates, detritus, and organic matter found within the substrate. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, along with occasional vegetable matter to ensure a balanced omnivorous diet.
