Balloon Platy Care Guide
Xiphophorus maculatus var. Balloon · Freshwater Fish

What Balloon Platy look like
The Balloon Platy is a short-bodied domestic morph of Xiphophorus maculatus. It has the compact platy body but with a more rounded, shortened profile. It is not a separate species, and the body form can make the fish less robust than normal-bodied platies.
Behavior & temperament
Balloon Platies are peaceful livebearers for hard, stable community aquariums. Their rounded body makes them less athletic, so avoid strong current and aggressive tank mates. They breed readily, and females give birth to live fry that benefit from dense plant cover.
Diet & feeding
Balloon Platies are omnivorous livebearers. Feed quality flakes or micro pellets, spirulina foods, blanched greens, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, and occasional small frozen foods.
Behind the name
Balloon describes the rounded short-bodied domestic form; platy comes from the common name for Xiphophorus maculatus.
