Bladder / Pond Snail Care Guide
Physella acuta · Freshwater Invert

What Bladder / Pond Snail look like
Physella acuta has a small sinistral, or left-coiling, shell and a soft mottled body with slender tentacles. Shells are thin and translucent brown to amber, especially in young individuals.
Behavior & temperament
These snails are peaceful, hardy, and extremely prolific hermaphrodites. They are usually introduced on plants and are harmless in reasonable numbers, but population blooms indicate excess food, decaying plants, or poor maintenance.
Diet & feeding
Bladder snails graze biofilm, soft algae, decaying plant matter, leftover fish food, and detritus. They should not be relied on to clean overfed tanks; their population size reflects available food.
Behind the name
Physella is related to Physa, a bladder-snail name; acuta means pointed or sharp, referring to the shell shape.
Plan your tank
Check the numbers before you buy: tank volume, a stocking plan, cycle progress, water changes, and your ongoing care routine.
