What Bumblebee Goby look like
The Bumblebee Goby (Brachygobius doriae) exhibits a diminutive, stout body that is laterally compressed and can reach a maximum adult size of approximately 2 inches (5 cm). This species displays pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males typically exhibiting more vibrant coloration and slightly larger dorsal fins compared to females. The body is characterized by striking, alternating bands of bright yellow and deep black, which serve as a form of aposematic coloration, warning potential predators of its unpalatable nature. The dorsal fin is elongated and continuous, while the pelvic fins are fused into a disc-like structure that aids in its benthic lifestyle, allowing it to rest flat against substrates. Additionally, the Bumblebee Goby possesses a well-developed lateral line system, which is crucial for detecting vibrations in the water, and its dentition is adapted for a carnivorous diet, featuring small, sharp teeth suitable for grasping prey.
Behavior & temperament
Brachygobius doriae is predominantly a benthic species, often found resting on the substrate of brackish waters in Southeast Asia. It exhibits a solitary to semi-social behavior, where individuals may be seen in loose aggregations, particularly during feeding or in suitable habitats. The Bumblebee Goby is known for its relatively calm temperament, although it can display territoriality, especially males during breeding periods. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs onto the substrate, and males fertilize them externally. This species tends to occupy lower strata of the water column, often hiding among rocks and vegetation to avoid predation.
