Common Goldfish Care Guide
Carassius auratus · Freshwater Fish

What Common Goldfish look like
Common Goldfish are long-bodied Carassius auratus with a single tail, normal eyes, smooth head, and no barbels. Adults can exceed 8 inches and may approach 12 inches in ponds or large aquariums.
Behavior & temperament
Common Goldfish are active, social, peaceful coolwater fish with a heavy waste load. They need large volumes and strong filtration and should not be mixed with slow delicate fancy varieties that cannot compete for food.
Diet & feeding
Common Goldfish are omnivores that graze algae, plant matter, detritus, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms. Use quality goldfish pellets or gel food as the staple, with blanched greens, duckweed, daphnia, brine shrimp, and occasional bloodworms.
Behind the name
Carassius is a carp name; auratus means golden or gilded.
