Least Killifish Care Guide
Heterandria formosa · Freshwater Fish

What Least Killifish look like
Heterandria formosa, commonly known as the Least Killifish, exhibits a diminutive and fusiform body shape, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 5 cm (2 inches). The species is characterized by a pale grey body that is prominently marked by a single, thick, and sharply defined horizontal black stripe that runs uninterrupted from the head to the caudal fin. This striking coloration serves as a form of camouflage in its natural habitat. The fish possesses a small, terminal mouth adapted for surface feeding, with fine, comb-like teeth suited for grazing on microalgae and detritus. The dorsal fin is positioned far back on the body, while the anal fin is elongated and extends towards the caudal fin, which is slightly forked. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; males are generally smaller and possess more vibrant coloration, while females are larger and more robust, particularly when gravid. Defensive adaptations include rapid swimming and the ability to blend into aquatic vegetation.
Behavior & temperament
The Least Killifish is primarily a benthic dweller, often found in shallow, vegetated waters where it exhibits a peaceful and non-aggressive temperament. This species is not an obligate schooler but is often found in small groups, displaying a loose social hierarchy with males establishing territories during breeding. Breeding occurs through a unique form of live-bearing reproduction, where females give birth to fully formed fry after internal fertilization. The species is known for its relatively calm demeanor, making it suitable for community tanks, although males may display territorial behaviors during the breeding season.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Heterandria formosa feeds on a varied diet consisting of small invertebrates, detritus, and microalgae. In captivity, they thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
