Ruby Red Peacock Care Guide
Aulonocara rubescens · Freshwater Fish

What Ruby Red Peacock look like
Aulonocara rubescens, commonly known as the Ruby Red Peacock, exhibits a strikingly vibrant coloration, characterized by a predominantly ruby red body with iridescent blue highlights, particularly on the head and fins. Adults can reach a maximum size of approximately 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm). Sexual dimorphism is pronounced; males display more intense coloration and larger fins compared to the more subdued hues of females. The species possesses a laterally compressed body with a moderately elongated shape, and features a distinctive dorsal fin that is long and pointed, extending nearly to the caudal fin. The presence of an adipose fin is notable, and the species exhibits a well-defined lateral line, which aids in sensory perception. The dentition is specialized for omnivorous feeding, with conical teeth adapted for grazing on algae and small invertebrates.
Behavior & temperament
Ruby Red Peacocks are primarily solitary or form loose aggregations, particularly during breeding periods. They inhabit the rocky substrates of the Malawi Rift, dwelling mainly in the mid to upper water column, where they exhibit territorial behavior, especially males who defend their chosen nesting sites. Breeding behavior is characterized by mouthbrooding, where females incubate fertilized eggs in their buccal cavity until they hatch. The species displays moderate aggression, particularly during the breeding season, as males establish dominance hierarchies and defend their territories against rivals.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Aulonocara rubescens primarily feeds on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus, showcasing its omnivorous diet. In captivity, it thrives on a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, spirulina, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure optimal health and coloration.
