Salvini Cichlid Care Guide
Trichromis salvini · Freshwater Fish

What Salvini Cichlid look like
The Salvini Cichlid (Trichromis salvini) exhibits a robust, oval body shape characteristic of the Cichlidae family, with a maximum adult size ranging from 10 to 20 cm. This species displays pronounced sexual dimorphism, with males typically larger and more vibrantly colored than females. The striking bright yellow overall base color is accentuated by two bold, broken, thick jet-black horizontal stripes that extend along the flanks, complemented by a vivid red to orange flush on the ventral region. The head is slightly elongated, featuring a pronounced forehead and a terminal mouth equipped with conical teeth adapted for a carnivorous diet. Notably, the dorsal fin is elongated and pointed, while the anal fin mirrors this shape, both contributing to its streamlined appearance. The presence of a lateral line system is evident, aiding in the detection of vibrations in the water, which is crucial for this species' predatory lifestyle. Defensive adaptations include a robust body structure and aggressive behavior, deterring potential threats.
Behavior & temperament
The Salvini Cichlid is known for its highly aggressive temperament, often establishing a dominant social hierarchy within its environment. This species is typically territorial, particularly during breeding periods, and exhibits a preference for dwelling in the mid to lower water column, often near rocky substrates or vegetation. They are not obligate schoolers and can be found either solitarily or in small groups, particularly in breeding pairs. Their breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females lay eggs on flat surfaces, and males guard the territory aggressively. The Salvini Cichlid displays a range of aggressive behaviors, including chasing and displaying, particularly towards intruders or rivals.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Salvini Cichlid is a carnivore, primarily preying on smaller fish and invertebrates. In captivity, it requires a diet rich in high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp to meet its nutritional needs.
