Shen's River Loach Care Guide
Hemimyzon sheni · Freshwater Fish

What Shen's River Loach look like
Hemimyzon sheni, commonly known as Shen's River Loach, exhibits a laterally compressed, fusiform body shape that is highly adapted for life in fast-flowing hillstream environments. Adults typically reach a maximum size of 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm), with some individuals reported up to 5 inches (12 cm). The species displays sexual dimorphism, with males often being slightly smaller and exhibiting more pronounced coloration during breeding periods. The body coloration ranges from a brown to tan base, adorned with darker mottled markings that provide effective camouflage against rocky substrates. Notably, the pelvic fins are partially fused, forming an adhesive disc that allows the loach to cling securely to rocks in turbulent waters. Additionally, this species possesses a well-developed lateral line system, which aids in detecting water movements, and its dentition is adapted for scraping algae from surfaces, reflecting its herbivorous diet.
Behavior & temperament
Shen's River Loach is primarily a benthic species, often found clinging to rocks and substrates in fast-flowing streams and rivers. It is generally a solitary or loosely grouped fish, displaying a non-territorial behavior, although it may exhibit hierarchical interactions during breeding seasons. The species is known for its peaceful temperament, rarely displaying aggression towards conspecifics or other tank mates. Breeding behavior involves egg scattering, where females release eggs over suitable substrates, and males fertilize them externally. This species thrives in well-oxygenated waters with strong currents, which are essential for its natural habitat.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, Shen's River Loach primarily feeds on algae, biofilm, and detritus found on rocky surfaces, making it an obligate herbivore. In captivity, it requires a diet rich in spirulina and other high-fiber plant materials to maintain optimal health.
