Ivory Mystery Snail Care Guide
Pomacea bridgesii var. Ivory · Freshwater Invert

What Ivory Mystery Snail look like
The Ivory Mystery Snail (Pomacea bridgesii var. Ivory) exhibits a medium to large size, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately 5 to 15 centimeters in shell diameter. Its shell is characterized by a globular, rounded shape, presenting a striking ivory-white to pale cream coloration that is both elegant and distinctive. The shell surface displays subtle spiral growth lines, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The body of the snail is typically white to very pale cream, contributing to its overall light appearance. This variant is an albino-like form of the mystery snail, lacking the pigmentation seen in other varieties. Notably, the species possesses a well-developed operculum that serves as a defensive adaptation against predation, allowing it to seal itself within its shell. The presence of a siphon allows for respiration at the water's surface, while the absence of pronounced sexual dimorphism makes it challenging to visually distinguish between males and females without close examination of reproductive organs.
Behavior & temperament
Ivory Mystery Snails are primarily benthic dwellers, often found grazing on surfaces within the substrate or on aquatic plants. They are generally solitary but can exhibit social behaviors when kept in groups, particularly during feeding. These snails are not obligate schoolers but may benefit from the presence of conspecifics in a well-planted aquarium. Breeding behavior involves egg-laying above the waterline, where females deposit clutches of eggs that are typically pink or orange in color. The temperament of the Ivory Mystery Snail is peaceful, making them suitable for community tanks; however, they can exhibit some territoriality when competing for food resources.
Diet & feeding
In the wild, the Ivory Mystery Snail is an omnivore, feeding on algae, decaying plant matter, and detritus. In captivity, they require a varied diet that includes high-quality algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources such as fish food or shrimp pellets to ensure optimal health.
Behind the name
Pomacea (from the Spanish 'poma', meaning 'fruit') refers to the fruit-like appearance of the snail's shell; bridgesii honors the American naturalist William J. Bridges.
