Surinam Toad Care Guide
Pipa pipa · Freshwater Reptile/Amphibian

What Surinam Toad look like
Pipa pipa is a highly flattened aquatic toad with a broad triangular head, small dorsal eyes, rough cryptic brown skin, and long tactile fingers used to detect prey in murky water. Its leaf-like shape provides camouflage among submerged litter. Reproduction is especially distinctive, with eggs embedded in the female's back until developed young emerge.
Behavior & temperament
Surinam Toads are quiet, fully aquatic bottom dwellers that rely on camouflage, touch, and sudden suction feeding. They are poor competitors with active fish and should be kept in peaceful species aquaria with gentle filtration, dim lighting, and many resting areas. They surface to breathe and must not be trapped under decor.
Diet & feeding
Surinam Toads are carnivorous aquatic ambush predators. Feed earthworms, blackworms, nightcrawler pieces, shrimp, fish pieces, insect larvae, and quality sinking carnivore foods. Use tongs if needed to make sure food reaches them.
Behind the name
Pipa is the genus name used for these South American aquatic toads. The common name refers to Suriname, part of the species' native region.
